The Allurion Balloon is the only weight-loss device that can be placed without endoscopy or anaesthesia. It creates a feeling of fullness which helps reduce portions and avoid snacking.
It is a thin polyurethane membrane folded into a small, vegan-based capsule which is swallowed, placement confirmed using X-ray and filled with fluid. After approximately 4 months, the fluid is released and the membrane passes through the bowel.

The Allurion scale is linked to the app, which is linked to our Virtual Care Suite+ software. We will be able to monitor your weight loss every time you stand on the scales, without even coming into our clinic!

The Allurion balloon is a behavioural change device, and for it to be successful, a new approach to your nutrition is essential. In order to sustain weight-loss after the balloon has passed, you will need to have learnt about appropriate nutrition, how to regulate your eating patterns and behaviours, how to plan your meals and strategies to overcome maladaptive eating behaviours.
Our dietitians are both experienced personal trainers and wellness coaches. Appointments are scheduled at particular key time points in your Allurion journey, and the remainder can be used according to your needs to help you achieve your nutritional, physical activity and lifestyle goals.

Our psychologist specialises in working with patients with weight struggles and will be able to help you to build a healthier relationship with food, work, life, others and yourself.

Part of improving your health and sustaining weight-loss is increasing your physical activity.
The VCS+ app will help us to track your activity also, if you have paired an activity tracking devie.
If you are not experienced with doing formal exercise, one of our dietitian/ PTs will be able to help you to formulate a program either in person or online. The most important thing is just to get moving.

3. Get Set Up
If you decide to proceed, you will be extensively counselled on the placement procedure.
You will be set up with your smart watch and scales as part of the Virtual Care Suite which will allow us to support you closely outside of the clinic, once the balloon has been placed.

4. Balloon Placement
The balloon will be placed by one of our doctors at our Radiology provider of choice.
No Endoscopy or Anaesthesia is required! Placement will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
We usually recommend that you do not drive yourself to the placement in case you are feeling unwell after the placement.

5. Be Supported
Our clinic and support team will be in frequent contact with you initially to support you through the initial part of your balloon placement which can be the most challenging.
You will be thoroughly supported to maximise the results from your balloon for up to TWO YEARS (depending on which program you choose), long after the balloon has passed.

6. Kickstart Your Weight-loss
Behavioural modification to your diet, lifestyle and physical activity need to occur to achieve weightloss. Your chosen Kick-Start, Kick-Off or Kick-On Program will help you with this.
The balloon passes on it’s own after approximately 4 months (it is rare for the balloon to require endoscopic removal).

After approximately 16 weeks of the Allurion Programme* on average, patients lose between 10-15% of their total body weight. (1,2)
Results can vary between patients depending on many factors.

The patient swallows a capsule containing the deflated balloon along with a thin tube. Our preferred placement technique involves using an assisted method, where as you swallow, the balloon is gently pushed down using a thin wire.
Once the balloon is confirmed to be in your stomach via X-ray, the balloon is filled through the catheter with 550 ml of water.
A second X-ray takes place to make sure the balloon is fully filled in the stomach. The placement takes place during a 15-minute outpatient visit.

Our preferred method of placement is using an assisted technique where a thin wire is used to help guide the balloon down as you swallow it. The balloon will be in the stomach within a few seconds with minimal discomfort.
This leads to a seamless process.
If you wish to attempt swallowing the. balloon without assistance, this remains an option also.

After approximately 16 weeks inside your stomach, a time-activated release valve will open, allowing the balloon to empty and pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract without the need for a removal procedure.**

Initially, people may experience nausea, abdominal cramping, and occasionally vomiting after balloon placement. Powerful anti-nausea medications are prescribed in advance to help you manage the symptoms.

We will soon have the capability to provide some rehydration with intravenous fluids in our clinic.

Following review by our team, most people return to normal activity within a few days; however, some people may experience longer side effects such as nausea.
It can be a good idea to book a few days off work afterwards just in case.

There are some specific dietary recommendations before placement and during the first week after placement as you adapt to the balloon.
The weeks that follow the placement are a great time to start making changes to the way you eat. You do not need to make huge changes to eat more healthily all at once, it's best to set small goals and change your habits a little bit at a time.

After the Allurion Balloon passes, you will continue to receive support from the BGOS healthcare team for up to 2 years after balloon placement.
At the end of the support programme, you should continue your healthy lifestyle habits.
One clinical study showed that 95% of the average weight loss with the Allurion Balloon and 6 months program was sustained at 1-year follow-up.(3)
Our aim is to help prolong this result with our extended 2 year program.

Our supportive team is readily available to support you through the difficult periods and we will try EVERYTHING reasonable to help you keep the balloon.
However, if you still cannot tolerate the balloon and it needs early removal, our clinic is the ONLY CLINIC in SE Queensland where the treating Allurion clinicians are accredited and able to remove the balloon with an emergency endoscopy procedure.
We are often contacted for advice from various Emergency Departments on balloon patients from OTHER CLINICS, because most doctors are not familiar with gastric balloons, or they have not been able to contact the patient’s Allurion care team.
Our commitment to your wellbeing is such that if you truly are struggling and need it removed within the first two weeks, if you do not have private health insurance cover we will cover the cost of the removal in a private hospital for you! We will not ask you to go to your local Emergency Department where the doctors may not have any knowledge about the Allurion Balloon.
